PART 8  April (2002)

MY COVIN (2002)

Not much done during the winter months and before I knew it time had caught me up and Stoneleigh 2002 show was only a few weeks away. Not to spoil a good habit I decided once again to pull my Covin apart and install new cooling system number 3 and renew all the Turbo lines. I tackled the Turbo lines first and using a selection of modified Cosworth hoses and 2" stainless steel tube I managed to get the pipes fitted exactly where I wanted them and at last could turn up the boost pressure. The old FRONT cooling system was removed along with all the pipe work and the radiator I chose to try out was a scrap yard item from a 1.6 CVH Fiesta, a little smaller than I wanted but at only £10 including single electric fan I thought I'd give it a try. I must stress this was only a test and if it fit ok I planed on having one specially made the same physical size but much thicker, however after much work I got the new rear mounted Fiesta system fitted and took my Covin outside for a test and was amazed to find that after 1 hour stationery running the single fan cut in and out only a couple of times with the temperature gauge reading only 1/2 way up the gauge 210'F where as before on the old system this would be almost off the top end of the scale. Time for a drive to see how it was under load..... Absolutely perfect, The temperature never went above 210'F. So as you can probably guess I have decided to keep my £10 Fiesta radiator.

Here's a  picture showing the modified Fiesta radiator now fitted to the rear of my Covin.

I have also fitted a complete set of braided brake flexi hoses.

Goodridge SVW0290-4P for the VW Variant

This made a big change to the feel and function of the brake pedal and I can  recommend them as a worthwhile upgrade from the standard ones. You can also see the AVO pro race coilover shocks.

5th & 6th May 2002 Stoneleigh show

Stoneleigh show 2002 had a great turnout once again but unlike last year my Covin showed non of it's early teething trouble resulting in the dreaded RAC recovery and from June 2001 has been 100% reliable covering about 4000 trouble free miles.

2nd & 3rd june 2002 harrogate show

The Covin Owners club would like to thank members for Covin's on display, Mark Turner, John Forrest, Rob Holland, Kev Beamsley and myself Darren Parker.

26th June 2002 MARRIED

I know things have been a little quiet on the web site this year but I do have a good reason for this.  A major event took place on 26th June 2002...I got MARRIED . .  During the months leading up to this date things were a little hectic and Covin Building ground to a halt. But my Covin was there to witness it all....So here's the proof.......

My Covin and my WIFE Claire My Covin and my WIFE Claire

Our witnesses were Colin Mann & Michael Dykes Myself, Claire & Michael & Janet Dykes
I feel I should mention what Michael Dykes (club secretary) did halfway through the wedding service, just as Reverend Donald Frith was asking me "do you darren take claire etc" Michael pulled out the Covin Owners Club Card to see if I had planned ahead and actually had mine on me.... Really I ask you ? What was I to do in the middle of our wedding? I did what any normal guy would do under the circumstances and stopped the wedding ceremony in mid stride to produce My Club card from my suit pocket.... Ha, no fine for me Michael..... What a guy, he thought he had me there but I've got news for him... It's time to get even so check out the picture below.

Here's Michael Dykes at our wedding having a drive of my Covin, but why is he holding his hands up ? Allow me to explain, he pulled away in 1st gear without problem but when he tried to select 2nd gear he somehow managed to select all the gears at the same time resulting in a tremendous GRINDING and CRUNCHING noise and that's why he held his hands up to say....."Ohh bugger, oops grinder warning" My gearbox survived the ordeal.

The following year at our clubs AGM I awarded Michael with a framed picture for the years "GRINDER AWARD" and the

"BEST TUNE EVER PLAYED ON A TYPE 3 GEARBOX"

Revenge is sweet......

17th & 18th August 2002 MALVERN SHOW

I took my Covin to the The Malvern 2002 kit car show in August as Michael & Janet Dykes kindly let us stay at their house for the weekend and the weather was extremely hot. Having been used to sub zero North East weather it was like being abroad.

27th August 2002

Following the Malvern 2002 kit car show in August and the weather being so hot, I found at higher speed when the Turbo was fully operational the temperature started to very slowly creep up but once speed was reduced it went back down again....Hmm another mod to be made to the cooling system  I think........ True to form with only 2 weeks before Donington show I pulled my Covin to bits again and carried out what I think will be the final mod to the cooling system.

Another  mod to the cooling system

I decided to add a second cooling fan from the radiator fan switch wiring  via 40amp relay and fitted this to the underside of the engine lid to assist air flow. The combination of the 2 fans has greatly improved the high speed operating temperature of the engine so we'll see how it performs in HOT weather and I hope this chapter on the cooling system can now be closed..

14th & 15th SEPTEMBER 2002 Donington show

Donington 2002 show went rather well this year and I travelled down in convoy with James Latcham & Andy Devlin who only live 40 miles south of me. Worth mentioning is that James only got his engine fitted the Thursday before the show and we actually got it running at 9pm for a 400 yard test drive on the Friday night ready for Donington trip at 6am the following morning. So all you Covin Owners take note.... NO EXCUSES come to the shows . . . . .  3 Covin's in convoy did make for a very interesting 220 mile trip each way  with a rather large amount of head turning all the way at the sight of what everyone thought were 3  911 Turbos in convoy....    Don't you just love your Covin.

Another trip to the Porsche autojumble was made on 21st September and I did manage to get a few goodies to keep me busy over the winter months......  The only problem is my garage is not big enough... Now what can I do about that I wonder....Watch this space... ?
