PART 4  MARCH (2001)

20-03-2001 . . .Finally I've made some  more progress on my covin. There has actually been quite a lot of work done but unfortunately most of it was the small fiddly bits that take the most time and I'm sure you didn't want to see pictures of pop rivets, screw heads, cable clips and the drivers door being fitted about 50 times to get it aligned up correctly (talk about a nightmare) It might be worth mentioning the doors here......I took great care in getting the drivers door aligned prior to painting but once the paint was applied and I tried to re-fit the door.....guess what......IT DIDN'T FIT.....(oh the trials and tribulations of building a covin)  After some cursing I eventually got the door to fit again but it took TOTAL OF 4 WEEKS to get it right and the door latch on the main post needed 1.5mm removing from the rear face in order to clear the door skin and keep the gaps round the door even. So that's the story up to now the next step is to fully prepare the passenger door and get that painted and fitted plus door mirrors and more electrical work . . . . . . . . . . I CAN SEE THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL . . . . I'm just waiting for a fine day now so I can take my Covin outside for the first time and have a test drive down the back lane.

The finished drivers door panel, this is a Porsche item and only required slight modification to get it to fit correctly. Here's the finished "Modified rear wiper" It took a lot of work but at least it works the way it should. Note the new mounting bracket and cutaway section on engine lid & fin.

Couldn't get the covin outside this week due to the North East weather so decided to fit the rear wiper and rather than have a dummy I set about finding a way to fit the motor without it fouling on the injection manifold....... this turned out to be a BIG mistake....The job took a full weekend and a few evenings as I had to cut out the boot lid and rear fin to allow the motor to sit high enough but then the motor drive arm and shaft were to long so they had to be cut down and shortened, next problem  the motor bracket was to big so I made a new one from stainless steel, then another problem, the drive shaft that the wiper fits on to was approx 40mm to long so this was shortened and the inner shaft welded back on to the lower arm. The wiring was simple enough and I was keen to  test it out......Guess what ? It worked.... But It only swept across half the rear screen...AAARGGGHH.........  So off it all came and I added 3mm to the motor arm length to increase the travel. Once re-assembled I tested it again........PERFECT.....Full sweep right across the screen . . . . I can definitely recommend people fitting the DUMMY rear wiper as this one of mine  was a complete !! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ..................But as it now works fine it was all worth it...... I think ?

Side view showing the wheels and the way they fit in the arches with 2" spacers rear, 1" spacers front. The drivers side is now almost complete apart from the lack of door mirrors. Look who's coming out to play.... The garage door that has acted like a cloaking device for the past 10 months was finally opened.
Well the North East weather did a strange thing this weekend.....a very bright object was visible in the sky, apparently it's called the SUN ? ? This meant that my Covin could at last be taken out for an airing down the back lane. About the only thing to report is that the engine is still running rough and won't idle but that did not stop me giving it a blast down the lane. I must say it was a wonderful experience to at long last have my FIRST drive in a Covin, it was even better as it was MY own covin I drove. It pulled on rather well considering the engine is not quite up to scratch but was rather reluctant to come to a stop....... My underwear was saved however by a very firm stamping of the brake pedal and the car came to a halt, I will be ready for that next time......All in all the car was outside for about 2 hours and had many runs up and down the lane then reversed in the garage to start work on the passenger door.....
My Covin outside for the first time Is there something missing here ? Oh yes the passenger door... Must get that fitted.
Looks a bit better than when I first bought it that's for sure. Here's a view of the door hopefully it won't be to long until the door is ready to be painted then the door mirrors to paint and fit.
Here's a picture of my home made heater that fits under the dashboard and works very well. Another view of my home made heater. The slot shown blows into the car and two other tubes are above for demisting via Porsche controls operating an internal flap to direct air top or bottom.
