Post subject:  66 Beetle Project

Well, after I finally finished work on the VW Type 3 project Thurs 20/03/08 :smt038
The owner came to collect it at 10am Thurs morning and he also brought the 66 Beetle as this was the deal for doing the T3 Resto.

Our new 66 Beetle is very much another project and not without a few issues of it's own which is only to be expected from something that's the same age as me :lmao Having said that, on the whole it's in pretty good condition.
I spent most of yesterday re-setting the doors and engine lid so they open and close correctly and they now fit perfectly with the body lines and the car now looks very straight :smt012

I've only owned it for 24hrs but so far it requires, Engine, Brakes, some wiring, the usual bodywork rust repairs, much better wing panel fit and painting to bring it to a good standard.

I'm not sure which direction to go with this one and I'm torn between full strip down with nice paint job OR going for the mechanically good and modified but having the RAT/HOODRIDE look and leaving the paint and rust marks here and there :smt017

Any comments appreciated :smt012

Here's a few pictures of the 66 Bug, the paintwork looks better than it really is here by the way.
At least Fudge seems pleased with it :smt003 He likes his VDubs you know :smt004

Think the seats could do with a clean :smt081 apart from being scruffy they're in very good condition with no rips at all.

Shouldn't there be something in here :smt017

While clearing out all the rubbish from inside and having a good poke about I lifted the rear seat out and found this old Mouse nest near Battery :lmao It even had loads of old seed and nut shells inside :smt019

The floor looks to be in good shape as it most of the interior but I'll know more during next week when I start pulling it apart to sort out a few of the snapped bolts that hold front/rear wings on :smt009

More to follow . . . .

scoooooooooooby :lmao
One little thing i have to say from experience. The beetles been lowerd and it has original seats..yes lol :smt017
If you look at the springs under the beetle seat there like old bed springs. When i drove around in my beetle that was lowered with standard seats and hit bumps in the road i was bouncing up and down in my seat like a right un :lmao .Either get it back to stock height or change the seats which helps .i had a pair of mazda seats with multy adjustments in mine 20quid from the breakers. Its a nice bug darren .keep it black with all the chrome...nice :smt004

this will get you in the mood :smt012

:lmao Some great clips there Danny cheers m8 :smt012
No idea who the guys from Durham are in the Oval though :smt017

By the way, the 66 isn't Black. It's Mazda Metalic Grey so no way will any bodywork touch up repairs work because metalics are a pig to match up. Only options are, full respray to look nice or leave it looking rough and Hoodride it. Still not sure yet but the main question has to be. Can I stop myself from getting the spray gun out again so soon after the Type 3 ? hmm, not sure on that one but I've a feeling I can resist the urge of painting it all as I'm bloody sick of sanding :lmao

Unfortunatly, I think you might be right m8 :smt005
It does have some rusty bits here and there but nothing to bad, there's a bit on the pasenger side gutter that needs some attention before it develops into rot but other than that it's just stone chip rust marks and quite a few dints to panel beat.
I'm looking forward to testing that Paint you sent me :smt003 Might clean up some chassis soon just so I can try it :smt019
