They look like Type 3 brakes to me but Beetle ones are very similar.
Can you post a picture showing the front beam and that will tell me for sure what they are :smt012

Yep, That's a Type 3 beam so they'll be Type 3 Brakes for sure :smt012

P.S. I edited your post to show the full size pictures as you'd used the link for thumbnail view :smt002

Thank you darren, i'm sure there will be many more questions as i'm new to aircooled vw parts, and its always difficult to identify what was somebody elses build, so any info on the cars history / build would be helpful.

You should really start a new thread to cover all work on this car in the rebuild/resto section. That way we'll all know what the car is and you can ask questions like this on the same thread. Keeps it nice and easy to follow because not all of us will remember you bought the silver narrow body covin (ex paul summers car) :smt002

By the way, what's wrong with the brakes ?

brakes are awful, nil stopping power wooden and no feel, just need a good overhaul while i'm at it i figure an upgrade is in order, i'm considering fitting the bmw calipers andy devlin has fitted due to larger pad area, would also like to fit a servo, braided hoses, get rid of all the flexi pipe joins throughout the braking system with jubilee clips (dangerous) and cross drilled discs maybe, any other suggestions on brake upgrade ? i will be sticking with aircooled engine so wont be anything too powerful 100 bhp tops.

Sounds like they just need a good service like you say. Braded flexi's are a good move as will be full brake fluid change etc :smt012
