CLAIRES COVIN PART 2  2005

I've been very busy during the early part of this year doing work to Covin owner James Latchams Covin and getting some of the bigger jobs out of the way so it's now time to start on Claires Covin and at the same time fit my Covin into the workload.

SO YOU'LL HAVE TO GIVE ME A CHANCE TO GET THE WORK DONE......

Claires Covin at Newark show 2005

Now you've seen the picture of Claires Covin at the 2005 Newark show lets have a look at just how we got it there.

20th MAY 2005

On 20th May, 4 weeks before Newark I had another one of my mad ideas, having had no time to carry out any further work on Claires Covin, in a moment of madness I decided to try and get her   Covin to the Newark show. Only problem was Claire decided she wanted a VW air-cooled engine fitting so Andy Devlin dropped off a spare 1641 engine for me and work commenced on changing and ordering lots of new parts. Alternator conversion, 009 electronic ignition, dog house tin ware/oil cooler, new carb, free flow air filter, vernier pulley, 4 into 1 merged header and bugpack back box plus a whole host of other things including new gearbox, complete fuel lines as old ones were rotten through, Porsche fuel filler on passenger side, full interior, paintwork, door window seals, electrics, front suspension, brakes, steering, gear linkage the list goes on and on . . .

The VW 1641 engine before work started.

The finished article 6 days later

Time to get the old CVH engine out and only 2 weeks before Newark

Rear bumper off and engine almost ready for removal.

Amazing what you can do with a trolley jack and some grunt.....

Engine out and gearbox out, time to tidy up the wiring and engine bay.

2 Days later and VW 1641 engine fitted and running. The new gearbox is also looking good and all gears working as they should.

Claires Covin get my old Fuchs alloys fitted thanks to Keith Woolfenden who kindly loaned me his VW to Porsche adaptor plates...

Cheers Keith, your a star.......

A little work on my lathe needed to make an alloy spring plate (top of picture) for the Spax coil over shocks.

10 days to go and counting.

Time to sort out the damaged front bumper and get it painted.

Fuchs alloys now fitted all round and looking better all the time.

Our fence came in handy here to help hold the rubber window seals in while the bonding had time to set overnight.

More interior is added, front seats, carpets and door panels.

The rear seats and carpets fitted.

I made a new alloy gear knob on my lathe and it turned out ok.

Used an old Porsche alloy wheel centre cap and turned this down on the lathe to make a new centre horn push for steering wheel. Looking good.

ONLY 6 DAYS TILL NEWARK

Only 6 days till Newark and time for MOT, so booked it in Saturday 11th June and guess what ?

It PASSED first time. There is a god.

The newly rebuilt Engine has only covered 2 miles in total and due to further work on the Covin it was later in the week before a test drive could be given and Claire finally had the chance to drive her Covin for the first time. She managed to drive it for about 6 miles before the 150 mile trip to Newark on 18th June.... Well... Where's her sense of adventure. If a 200 mile trip to Stoneleigh in 2001 was good enough for my Covins test drive I'm sure 150 mile trip for Claire and her Covin is only fair.
