Covin Owner Chris Mills
Chris Mills found his fully built
Covin in 2003 advertised on eBay and following a rather frantic bidding war and
words with the seller he finally won the auction for the Covin.
The Covin had
actually been in a car sales showroom for the last six
years covering only two hundred miles during that time?
The showroom had been sold and the Covin was surplus to
requirements. He told me that nothing had been done to
it for couple of years and it needed a bit of TLC to
bring it up to scratch.
His Covin was
delivered on a trailer and once started up it sounded a little sick due to 6
years of standing so he quickly drove it off the road
and straight into the garage. Where it’s been
for the last 6 months.
Chris goes
on to say....
During this time
I've attended to the obvious things like seized brakes, fitting a
new handbrake cable. (Speedy Cables to the rescue) I've also
uncovered some nightmares with the wiring, which I've
now resolved. The engine is of some concern though, an
1835cc VW air-cooled. When changing the plugs,
impossible to get at in a single garage without taking the
rear wheels off, no.3 the front left hand plug was
particularly tight. To get the thread started with new
plug was nigh on impossible, using extension bars &
universal joints on the socket. It went in eventually but was extremely tight, I
fear that the thread maybe damaged. I know I should
have done a compression test while the plugs were out,
but I was impatient to see if the misfire was cured. I'm
still not sure, it sounds better, but not quite right. The
two huge Dellortos may need setting up. Now I dare not
remove the plug.
I've decided to
leave it and risk driving it 12 miles to the MOT station. If it fails big
time, I can drive to Sarah's house, just round the corner
where I have a double garage.
That’s the story
so far.
